Pet Door Installation Guide: Door-Mount and Wall-Mount
Installing a pet door is easier than you think. Most homeowners can finish in under 2 hours. Here is how.
Tools Needed
Power drill, jigsaw, measuring tape, pencil, level, screwdriver, safety glasses, caulk.
Door-Mount Installation (2 Hours)
1. Choose Height
Bottom of flap should be at or slightly below shoulder height — 2-6 inches from floor for most dogs.
2. Mark and Cut
Use the included template. Drill pilot holes at corners. Cut with jigsaw along marked lines.
3. Install Frame
Slide exterior frame in from outside. Align interior frame. Tighten screws evenly in diagonal pattern.
4. Test and Seal
Check flap swings freely. Apply weather stripping if needed.
Wall-Mount Installation (3-4 Hours)
1. Locate Studs
Use stud finder. Tunnel must fit between studs.
2. Check for Hazards
Verify no electrical wires, plumbing, or HVAC ducts in the cut area.
3. Cut and Frame
Mark both sides with template. Cut interior drywall first, then exterior. Build wooden tunnel frame.
4. Install and Insulate
Insert tunnel, secure door units on both sides. Caulk exterior edges. Fill gaps with foam insulation.
Pro Tips
- Install in moderate weather — extreme temps affect materials.
- Wall-mount is a two-person job.
- Prop flap open for a few days and use treats to train your pet.
- Test all 4 lock positions before leaving pet unsupervised.
